Audio Kultur: It Was Supposed To Be So Easy

Audio Kultur: February 2014

This past month, I helped edit the February issue of Audio Kultur, a new magazine in Beirut, Lebanon, that focuses on unique stories from both in the country, and the international music, artist and club scene as well. Far from a house music aficionado, I was introduced to some really cool music through editing DJ interviews in the magazine and reviews of new albums and EPs. For example, after reading through an interview with Stefan Biniak, I found his “Read All About It Bootleg,” which is great. Also included are interviews with other DJs as well, like Robert Babciz and D’Julz. I would recommend going through the music reviews as well, as there are a handful of artists in there worth a listen.

But, I have to say, my favorite story was my friend and colleague’s piece (Andreane Williams) on Super Out Discotheque. Just down the street from where I live, there is a “discotheque” that has been there since the dark days of Lebanon’s civil war. The shop owner is a fighter turned music aficionado, and still operates today. Shunning the internet, but embracing technology (just a little bit), he now makes CD mixes as opposed to mixed tapes. It’s a great story that gives a unique picture of Lebanon and is well-worth the read.

Pretty cool….looked through some magazines and there are some pretty subtle differences but some things that are just like the American magazines.
